Sick of the snow? Why not head to the desert?

January 26, 2011

As the Northeast gets hit with yet another snow storm, I find myself daydreaming of escaping to a place that has only seen snow once– the Sahara Desert. It may not be your typical travel destination, but anywhere that’s warm would work for me at this point.

A number of different adventure tour groups, including Authentic Morocco and Gecko’s Grassroot Adventures, offer overnight camel treks into the Sahara. Start  off by hopping on your camel (which is much harder than it sounds- see photo gallery) and enjoy a leisurely trek into the desert. Watch as the sunsets on the deep rolling sand dunes of this ancient land, as you approach you camp for the night. The sleeping arrangements leave a lot to be desired, but it adds to the experience. One word of advice though, watch out for giant beetles that like to burrow under the sheets.

After your done settling in, spend the night dancing and listening to Moroccan music with your nomadic guides before falling asleep under the stars. Awake the next morning to watch the sunrise- a view you won’t soon forget.

Get back on your camel after a quick breakfast of homemade naan and trek back to civilization. Spend the rest of your day exploring the Souks of Marrakesh and a more lively part of Morocco.

Truly an amazing experience, minus the giant beetles that is. Nice pictures, one in particular is my favorite.
